Odd thing, I've seen post after post in the Sims2 forums with the same problem when they installed the Nitelife expansion. Screen goes blank and you can still hear the game running but you have to either reboot or get out somehow.
Most of those with the problem there had ATI cards and ATI has had known problems with their drivers and some chipsets being bad. So it could very well be a driver problem with the GF6800GT. I'm running a GF6600 in Sims2 with no problems so far. Andy had some problems with WOW and ATI cards, but not the blank screen, his just froze or told him it couldn't enable the 3D engine. In his case it was the Radeon 9600 Pro. RMA'd the card and all is right again.Replacement card is aok.
I suspect it's something with the drivers and the games so keep fishing for a driver that it likes.
