I doubt the softer woods could stand the heat...

The main advantage to a clay mold is that you can heat it, and then let the whole structure cool slowly once you have poured the silver. Rapid cooling can cause crystal structures and other irregularities to form in the metal.

These are more serious for stress/strain situations, but I think they could interfere with heat transfer efficiency if they occurred to a significant degree. How much, I have no idea. Basically if the fire doesn't involve wires, it's outside of my study focus
