came when Dell couldn't sell systems because of lack of Intel CPUs and Maxtor was sitting on a huge chunk of drives made for Dell and specifically configured for the Intel ICH. Running these drives on a VIA or AMD controller would inadvertently wreck them but they were sold off anyway to retailers like Staples etc. Out of 3 drives I got two died within 3 days or else showing up as single or 3 platter drives when, in fact, they were 2 platters. The third drive I had was cosmetically massaged by moving it from Intel to VIA and back and has been running for about 18 months now in my son's box (taking all possible kind if abuse without problem).

IBM drives are too fast for the Intel controllers, particularly in SE and ME where they can die because of shutdown issues of the OS.
