I have in or near my possession a Maxtor 1.5GB, 4.3GB, and an 8.4GB that run fine. The 1.5 is three years old now, and has endured a lot of abuse. But other persons seem to have a lot of trouble with 'em.

Part of the bad rep came from the Celeron days when the high PCI speed associated with 83MHz bus tended to turn Maxtor drives into expensive metal bricks.

Things weren't helped several months ago when Dell, a Maxtor customer, dumped a bunch of spare drives into OEM market channels at the beginning of the economic slowdown. Unfortunately these were heavily optimized for the Intel IDE controller, since Dell has traditionally been an Intel-exclusive customer, and when mated to VIA chipsets "very bad things" could occur.
