You're putting the formatted hard drive back in the first computer and same problem?

Try a different windows disk. It wont prompt you for the serial number until it's loaded quite a bit of stuff and rebooted at least once. If it wants to load and continue on, it would appear the your disk is the problem. I wouldn't go and buy one though,without isolating whether your disk is faulty or not. XP is still widely available. ]
