I agree, had a few bad experiences with USB drives running over a hub, they don't like that very much and tend to crap after awhile. If you have extra on-board headers, that's a much better option, otherwise, even PCI-based expansion card with USB controller is a better option, never had issues with those running drives. The trick may be to run the extra power USB connector to a powered hub or else use a drive that comes with its own power brick.
