4-pin to 8 pin adapters are completely useless because the 12V and ground lines are all connected on the motherboard level anyway. The only thing you achieve with such a connector is to add additional resistance in the path that affects the supply voltage depending on load.

The typical added resistance by having another plug connector is not much, pretty much in the order of 10 mOhm but at 5 Amps going through it under load, that can make as much as 50 mV (not too much either but if you can avoid it by leaving out the connector that does nothing that is not already done on the motherboard level anyway, then just leave it out)
