No matter how you figure it backing up is imperative. I use to mirror drives but any more just keeping my favorite programs in a folder and using Acronis does the job outside of my one Puter that has RAID0+1...USB is slow for me and my external HD's run via 1394b or SATA.
Newegg has the new Raptor which is as fast as SCSI and of course there's the new SSD's small but expensive but dropping in price
