Thanks ran. I gave the Asus EEE a little look but it seems a bit fiddley for my folks. They have an old (333MHz!) Gateway so they know what to expect.
I saw an Acer 5720 which fits the bill, (with XP etc) on ebuyer -link below- (I am in the UK), which I mention in case there is something about Acer I should know ? They seem pretty well established.
I googled laptop fires and found mostly Dells and HP were exploding & recalling. Some kind of cheap battery supplier deal I would guess, like those cheap mobo caps a while back which blew everyone's mobos.
Anyway Acer were not mentioned for fires as far as I could see and I have heard they are OK from a couple of sources, unless anyone here knows different.
Might get one myself in fact.
