I don't think so. AGP has 2 GB/s bandwidth which is about as much as you can get for example through the Hypertransport interface to the system. The rest, that is all the PCIe branches are essentially "empty magnification" of that bottleneck and the debates about 16x vs. 8x are just travesty.

FYI, it does appear as if the AGP version might be faster than the PCIe offering - I am still comparing some apples and oranges as in different system configurations.

Also, you might check your calendar on the 10+ years, AGP appeared in Q2 1998 IIRC, definitely not in '96
