Although it might not have helped you in this case, keep in mind that you can navigate to a repair console by booting from the WinXP CD-ROM. Then type "help" to see what your command options are.

Available commands include CHKDSK, which can be invaluable if a little bit-mixup in the directory table has cost you, say, the entire contents of a partition.
