1. Could be a virus -- do you maintain up-to-date antivirus and anti-spyware software? Or, it could be an overheating problem. If the laptop is not in a confined space or near another heat source, then the fan may be failing and/or the CPU and heatsink may need to be cleaned and reseated. This often requires partial disassembly of the unit. Or, it could be a hardware failure.
2. Could be related to the above. Less commonly, perhaps your CMOS battery is failing. Has it ever been changed?
3. Has it always been that dark? If so, you may just have a low-quality screen. Otherwise, make sure you have pressed the correct keystroke sequences for changing the brightness (see your product manual for details). Alternately, either the cathode lamp is getting old, or you have a problem in the lamp driver circuit (these are generally irrepairable hardware problems).
4. The connector for the screen may be coming loose. This requires partial disassembly of the unit to fix. Alternately, the wires are breaking in the connector and your laptop screen has reached the end of its service life.
5. Hardware problem, and very probably the cause of (1) and (2). Again, make sure the CMOS battery has been replaced. If that doesn't do it...it's probably new laptop time You can probably recover $100 by selling this unit for parts, though.
