OS, it is something in the OS or a proggie you loaded.
did the machine have any problems before you loaded MS Office XP, it may just be a carryover...........
in the past, i have been able to use a very small shutdown script, sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.
you could try an overinstall ont he WinXP and see what is, a little bit of work, but it may restore the shutdown function...
