A friend back in college had an old, slow Compaq (one of the neutered Covington Celeron 266s IIRC). I scratched up a 5-line C++ program that would write out 5MB of text to a dummy file, and named the whole works "CPQDiag.exe" and "CPQDiag.txt", so as to follow Compaq's then-naming scheme for OEM-specific files.

Finally, through a floormate who typically visited that dorm room more often than myself, it was set it up with a shortcut-pointer in the Startup folder. Every he rebooted his machine (which was often, given its tendency to crash), the executeable appended 5MB of trash into the text file, until gradually, he began to wonder what had happened to all of his disk space
