If you use Seagate's DiscWizard 2003 on a Seagate drive, it has the option of "replace an existing drive", that is it will copy the entire drive over to the new one including the operating system and match the NTDLR so that you can take out the old drive and the new one will become an exact replacement with completely preserved file structure. I believe the option is manufacturer-specific, that is, with the Seagate version of it, it'll allow this option only with a Seagate drive, with the Hitachi version, this option will only exist with a Hitachi drive -- and the Maxtor version seems to be totally screwed up anyway..

Anyway, it is something to try out
