The problem is you have a bad connection, the HD is drawing more power (current) thru the connection then your poor connection you made can handle, so it heats up losing power there. Its acting like a resistor, so you are hurting the power supply by drawing xtra or more power & the HD is receiving less voltage which makes it draw more current. In total the PSU is being strained, the whole system could be hurting, besides the HD is being slowly cooked.
