Ditto that, a hard drive shouldn't be dissipating more than 15-20W of power. None of the wires should be seeing more than about 1A of current. For the joints to show any appreciable heating at that current level suggests resistance of at least one-half ohm, maybe more.

Cristi, how much insulation length did you strip off each wire's end before twisting them together? If it was less than 10-15mm, it's not enough; or, possibly some of the strands broke off due to excessive cutting force during the strip process. Also, the wires need to be twisted very tightly before being taped.
