Either would be suffice but for me it's AMD and as far as recording goes there are many cheap solutions since the release of the CLabs X-Fi which would handle/make a good sound as well as Gaming...CLabs also has an EMU Line Up which will work and also there's VIA Envy's.
After aquiring a decent soundcard it'll be in the hands of a mixer and software which will be the tweaker
I really like Black Diamonds Tsunami for price/performance on software sound tweaking
