The real rule of thumb is the cooler the better. The traces & parts inside the the IC's (chips) just laying around (no power) break down alittle over time. Heat causes that breakdown to happen faster, so the more heat added the faster the breakdown. They have a lifetime rating but I have been out of that loop for along time now. From the CPUs of the past I am amazed these new much smaller size traces & more densely packed chips having more heat survive more then two years.
