Yep but I think the problem is that no one can determine how fast technology and speed increase are going to be other then the rugh gudlin that Moore's Law gave us which is still the standard.
With Socket 7 and AGP, a wall was hit which made both AMD and Intel to switch with the cache and Slot 1/A until the 1GHz wall was hit and the drop of ISA...then the switch again.
After SocketA's wall and the MHz cahnce comaprison (which I believe was tried before with AMD and Cyrix) came the new Socket (could've passed 754 if not for the Race game between the Manu's) we now face another 3GHz wall and along with the need for speed (D/C's) other Hardware has to be increased (ie.PCI-e, SATA, DDR2)... both Co's are going the same route just in a different order it seems...
