We didn't have DSL out here until last year; and it became available right after Qwest went along a ten-mile stretch of highway (starting just over 3 miles from the nearest town) and replaced all of the telco branch-off boxes that serve the subdivisions.

My first guess is, the new boxes have DSL repeaters that eliminate the C.O. distance restriction. My second guess is that Qwest, in spite of having the business sense of a moderately bright rock, finally smelled just how much broadband service money Comcast was cleaning up out here....
