I think the change I made that did the trick was to change the TCP/IP setting under network connection to "Obtain an IP address automatically". I had specific addresses set from trying to get the two computers networked in the first place (which I later realized probably wasn't necessary but hadn't changed).

The other thing that seemed to help was giving the switch some time to make the connection. I had been making a change in the network settings and then immediately trying to get on line. In the end I made a change and had to leave the room for a couple minutes. When I returned the computer was successfully online. After that it did seem to help to give the switch a minute to recognize a change and make a connection.

I was wondering why a test with a cross-over cable had been successful. Now I understand. Thanks.
