This is too scary for me to consider if my fan turned off I would replace as soon as possible.
Your fan could be broken & you would not know it then with a normal visual check unless you stressed the CPU ahead of time. You ever burn yourself on a hot 100 watt light bulb, its very hot. A mobil CPU could be a different story & thats scares me too even thou its made to spin down & lots of electronic's goto a sleep mode. I have a weird view of things the more complex you make something the even more ways you for that something to break down, just more to break now. I use this rule for household devices to.
