Definitely play around with different drivers first, as LW suggested.

To give a particularly unusual example, one of my friends had a situation where the system would work fine after the initial XP install, but once the motherboard drivers, etc. were installed it would hardlock about 5-10 seconds after the desktop appeared. After testing all peripheral cards separately in another machine and finding no faults, he ended up going through a motherboard RMA only to discover that the problem still persisted on the replacement board.

Turned out the real culprit was an incompatibility between the ATi Catalyst driver revision for his 9600, and the nForce chipset (but only after chipset drivers were installed). However, because of a consistency in his driver installation order after each XP reinstall (or System Restore rollback) attempt, it really did look like a motherboard hardware failure was gumming things up.
