I am not sure if I understand you right but I think I think I can get you there.
Open windows explorer & set the folder the way you like it. Then click the tab (view or tools) at the bottom click folder options, click on the (new view tab) now make sure that these two boxes are checked.
Remember each folder's view settings
Show file attributes in Detailed view
While your at it check if there is anything else there you would like to have set to.
Like show hidden file, Show file extentions, ECT.

This method works with 98 but not in my XP. Thou XP has one saving grace it will change all folders to the one you just setup, if you like.
Just remember that you have to visit each folder once & set it up the way you like it then you will be done.
BTW this wont remove folders from the sort so you will still have to page down to get to the files.
