When you wiped that HD did that clean the bootup area ?, I never remember that name anymore. I did see a video problem like this once along time ago, where you fix the settings or the drivers & would boot up fine only once then the next bootup the video settings would change & bootup into safe mode.
I did not get to work on it long enuf, my work sent it out to be fixed. It came back the first time still broken. I am pretty sure it was fixed with software not hardware. The description was not clear & did not fit the problem.

BTW no modem problem as far as I remember LoL & the system was a P II.
