My dad has two or three similar units that were pulled from deceased laser printers. They move a fair bit of air -- a LOT of air, in fact -- but they make plenty of noise for the privilege.

Main advantage to a squirrel cage is that it can move against a head resistance without a huge falloff in efficiency.
