Because that's what all the XMS low latency RAM is set at now. Also, since
it is a 256 meg DIMM, it might overclock better than the 512 meg DIMM's I have.
But you need plenty of memory if you want to play DOOM III at max speed,
so 1 gig is mandatory.
Yeah, I guess I could lower the multiplier and then see if the memory would
go even higher, enough to overcome the gaming performance hit that running
the TRCD at 3 is causing. But I don't know how much higher the clock rate
would have to go on the RAM to do that. I bet it's quite a bit, though.
Which just goes to reinforce what I've been saying for a long time.
High latency is evil for 3D gaming. High clock rates are useless for games, if
it means paying a significant price in latency. Which is why DDR2 is garbage.
What we need is DDR RAM that will run at higher clock rates while still
holding the latency at 2,2,2.
