A couple things I learned doing it:

Win98 doesn't have to be on the first partition, but the first partition has to be FAT32 if you want Win98 on your dual boot.

Also, the reason for leaving the Win98 space unallocated at first is because if you create a second partition from the WinXP CD during setup, it will make it an extended partition, but you actually need it to be another primary partition to have an OS on it.

But it is not such a big deal if you do create the second partition during WinXp setup because you can always delete it and repartition it as a primary from within XP after you get XP up and running.

I chose to format my XP partition with FAT32 so that it would be visible from 98. You could also have 98 on FAT32 on your first partition and XP on NTFS on your second partition, but then the XP drive would not accessable from the 98. Some may prefer it that way though.

I'm sure you guys know most all this already, but I note it here in case it can help someone (I know I tried to google the info before hand and had a hard time finding a definitive answer to my questions).
