Why are the red laser pens so bright and travel so far?
Beats me out of my normal field of study, only guessing I do think they are overdriven 4.5 volts & they drain those tiny batteries pretty fast. The LEDs look very different then the ones I fool around with. They also use one or more optical lens too to increase brightness & range.
The UV are a different matter most of the light is beynold our range of vision. Another thing is the amount of visuable light from the brightest 5mm UV LED I know of (have my hands on) throws out 300 MCD typical, while my cheap white 5mm LEDs throws out 9,500 MCD, 31.6 times more light.
Also for a light show you would use an even more powerful LED so it could be seen better even in daylight. I would recommend blending to different color LEDs for this, thou I never remember which ones gives which colors. Not an artisic bone in my body & mind. I posted a LED project awhile back using high powered LEDs with a cheap circuit that kept them running cool, no or a little H/S & longer life.
