I've done that twice with WinMe, but wouldn't recommend it. You'll end up with a messy installation that deteriorates over time, and WinMe is NOT Microsoft's best effort at producing a Windows OS.

If you can get used to XP, it will be a lot more stable in the long run. Would suggest that you simply use the new system, re-install your applications, and if necessary, install your old hard drive as a secondary (and then copy any data files etc. across to the new system).
