Full/Halfduplex is ,usually, a matter of negotiation results between the network card and the switch.
Tell your friends to check whether or not the cards
a) support 100mbit
b) 100mit works/is enable
c) same for full/duplex.
most switches and hubs have leds to indicate what speed and duplex mode a port is running at.
I'd also recommend uninstalling all trash like ipx/spx and just leaving bare tcp/ip installed...
