Whew.....I'll give you my life-experiance with ext. CDRW's and look at the other questions in turn.

Don't go external CDRW using USB-1.1, period. They are slow and prone to errors.
Firewire quite possibly is on the way out with the advent of USB 2.0. If you go external, short of SCSI devices, go USB 2.0.
Stay away from multi-port hookup devices. In the past I found that I really only use one connection after discovering LPT drives and the like were created by subhumans.
USB 2.0 through a PCMCIA slot? If it is a type II card, (using both slots at once), I can see it. But....using a single slot, (16 bit), I don't see how. That is one for LED or Ludicrous to answer.
