Well you might have a point. Now that I think about it I was assuming they were 5 Volt. I was under the impression that case LED indicators were 5 volt. But now I think that I might have assumed too much or crossed reference something.
I knew they had to work one way, but never knew they needed some current limiting device to work.
I barely know the physical difference between a radial capacitor and a transisitor  .
I'm only using what I had in the parts pile so I don't have any specs on the forward voltage , etc.. That's why I tried to series them when I suspected drawing over what they were spec for.
Maybe the best thing to do is buy a few new ones and know what I'm working with. Ain't no big thing, but curious enough now to play with them.
