Does the HD light come on & stay on this whole time ?
Has he run scandisk & with surface test also ?
Is the computer in a highly magnetic area ?
A place to start before the HD is the CMOS setup set normally. If internal & external cache was turned off & the spread spectrum control is way off (enabled) those could make the computer run real slow, other stuff could be set wrong RAM ect.. If this is the problem then a virus did it & is still lurking on the HD.
