the zalman seems to be a stack of plates of copper sheet compressed by bolts and load spreaders at one end (machined smooth) and splayed open at the other end to allow air flow

pretty neat and effective design since copper is so conductive and you can use 80mm low noise fans to cool em, might get one when I have some money, like in 2003
