Bob is correct on his view of "combo anythings".
Yes, on a laptop, it is nice having a combo drive so you don't have to drag along your CDRW if you wish to use it while the DVD is in the bay. (Or vice-versa).
When the combo goes down, your out "both" devices. Also IMHO, these "combo" drives are more susceptible to failure. This may due to the fact they are used "twice" as much.
I saw a write-up of USB 2.0 enabled laptops in one of my trade magazines. They are out there but only in high-end business machines for the brief moment. They will be on everything like "FOS" within a short period.
