If you do not use a router, than all computers will be configured with the same TCP/IP information and will conflict with each other, big time, even when you are not using the web.
Seriously, for $80, the router is a hard option to beat. That is, unless you want to set up a "host" machine with two NICs, and either use Windows' Internet Connection Sharing, or a third-party package such as Sygate.
