DFT won't run from within windows. So, the only other way is to get another hard drive format it and load DOS, install DFT in DOS and run it. Scratching sounds very familiar. Had a similiar sound happening that would lock me up for about ten seconds and then I could continue. After performing DFT and running the exerciser I found out which drive was failing. Because when it started to test, it got to about 25% on the test, and the scratching noise began. The drive did pass the test, and I was ready to send it back anyway. I went away for the weekend so I shut my computer down for the weekend. And I havn't heard the scratching noise since (Knock on Wood). Also, I did change the setting so my drives turns off after an hour. So, maybe they do hate being on for 24 hours straight.
