it was a game compatibility update (it helped a bunch of games none of them I played). Have him run all the updates, it won't hurt and may actually help his problem. There was also a special tweak tool for Win2K that would let you run the game in a higher priority. Is this your kid or that one you were helping from another BBS? Why in the world would a novice with OS's be running Win2K? Most games you need Administrative rights to Play so that may be a source of the problem.
