But to answer Bob's question, a WinModem relies on the CPU to handle the heavy work of data encoding and compression/decompression. Just being connected to the internet is going to cause a draw on your CPU. Whether dnet is using it or not doesn't matter, just having it connected is all it takes. That's why WinModems are so cheap: you aren't getting an onboard DSP if you pay less than $50, as a general rule of thumb.

Anyone here remember when WinModems were called RPI (Rockwell Protocol Interface) modems?
