that's a shame, data recovery in a situation like yours could be very expensive.

Hard drive failures by brand seem to vary depending on who you talk to. Myself, for drives >1GB, I have worked with four WDs (2.5, 4.2, 20, 40), an IBM (6.4), and three Maxtors (1.5, 4.2, 8.4), with no failures. I have seen a few old 540s and 800s go bad, but those were mostly scrap pulls from old HP commercial desktops and no doubt had a long, hard life.
