As for the high trunkline, it does interfere with rear visibility but also has the benefit of improving the drag coefficient. And the new Civics didn't really lower the trunkline, they just altered the profile a bit.
Given a choice I do prefer the styling of the two-door, though.
But I think if I had the choice of buying any new, inexpensive, compact car, I would go for a Jetta, an Impreza, or a Focus, in that order. Knock off the "inexpensive" and I would fall straight into the arms of a BMW 3-series
