because on ide, two devices on a single channel can not be accessed at the same time. if you play a game that uses both cd-rom and the hard drive, it slows the system down a bit accessing he hard drive and the moving to cd-rom on a single channel.

If you seperate your main hard drives and the cd-rom on different ide channels, game plays and indeed, anything that is ihard drive/cdrom intensive will run more smoothly.
