My city offers fiber. But it's fiber to the curb, and coax to the house. Wanna see how much bandwidth they offer for basic customers? Click here and enter the zip code 97520. The top of the list is the Ashland Fiber Network. The bottom of the list is some dumbass AOL user. And close to last is the lousy Charter Pipeline. If you look further up the list, you can see what it was like when it was still Charter@Home.

The thing that pisses me off is the AFN is a few bucks cheaper, for around 10-15 times the bandwidth, but they can't get it to my door because they would have to dig up the street. They aren't willing to do it for one subscriber, so I either have to be patient and wait for them to get around to it, or canvas my neighborhood and get some other customers for them. Seems to me that should be their job, and since my neighborhood is populated almost entirely by gray haired lesbians, I'm going to hold off on the door knocking.
