Hard Disk - no, you dont need to reformat the whole disk, as you can either upgrade without further ado or you can wipe C: only and presuming you have other partitions eg D: ? then you can leave these intact.

If you wipe C: and do a clean install, all your software will require reinstallation, however your documents and other files kept on D: etc will be available once you reinstall word or whatever.

Upgrade is easiest in the short term as you do not even have to reinstall your software. However the advantage of reformatting is that you clean out all the unnecessary junk you may have picked up reducing wasteful CPU activity and also you reorder the files coherently which speeds up read times so your system (usually) runs better for it.
