Fact is there ARE different AGP specs, early slots were AGP 1.0 but later on the spec was revised to 2.0 to include definitions for higher power draw, AGP4X, etc.

Basically look to see if the AGP's edge connector is interrputed by one notch or two (not including the little dongle-tab at the very end, which is also separated by a notch). IIRC If the electrical contacts are interrupted by two notches it is AGP4X and generally an AGP 2.0 card as well.

Also do not plug an AGP video board into a P4 i845/i850 motherboard until you have asked around, see Van's Hardware for details...
