Works! Took me two days, and lots of panic, but it works!
And, maybe found small security hole in XP.
Are you using only an Administrator password? No Users or User passwords?
Think only the administrator can make major system changes?
Try rebooting, hit "F8" for the standard "Safe Mode....blah blah" options screen.
Select "Directory Services Restore Mode"
You'll boot up in "Safe Mode" without any password at all!!!! (as long as only using admin. password - which it doesn't ask for!)

I only found this out because, and I have no idea why, everytime I started up in "Safe Mode Command Prompt" and replace explorer.exe with explorer.bak, it would hose my start menu/start button/whole system.
I tried it on two computers, with a DOS person watching, full instructions in hand.
Everything was done correctly, just wouldn't work!
Worst part, getting the backup back in was just as hard. Seems that doing the "copy" command in safe mode several times helped, but not at home!
I had to restart in "Debug" or it wouldn't boot at all. Total lockup at start screen.
Debug fixed it, I don't know how. Never asked me a thing.
If you go into "Directory Services" mode, you can change explorer.exe to whatever (I used origexplorer.exe), and set the .bak version as .exe
Pretty scary, especially since anyone could do it!
