ECC is supported only by the AMD chipset. The SIS chipset will not even boot with it (since almost all DDR ECC modules are registered which is not supported by the chipset) and the VIA chipset has no support for ECC unless you get one of the "rare" first series of board like the Shuttle AK31 Rev.1.

In addition, the majority of ECC registered DIMMs out there is using x4 chips which are not seen by either the VIA or the SIS chipset and cause a lot of timing problems with the AMD chipset.

Bottom line, you don't need it and you certainly don't want it unless you are going with registered ECC x8 chips for a total memory of 1.5-2 G on a VIA chipset, in this case, the ECC part will simply be ignored.
