If you upgraded from another OS (Like Win98) it keeps all the files necessary to Uninstall WinXP and return to your previous OS. If you go into the control panel, Add/Remove programs, at the bottom of the list you should see "WinXP Uninstall Information". It should also have an estimated file size next to this item. If you are sure you don't need to revert back to your old OS, then go ahead and remove it.

Other issues:

  • System restore
  • WindowsXP keeps old versions of your drivers so you can restore back if you install a new proggy/driver that borks your system. These take space, obviously.

  • Thumbnail databases
  • WindowsXP writes a little database file in each folder that has images that stores the thumbail for use when you enable thumbnails in explorer. These files also take space

Both of the "features" above can be disabled. I'm not sure if it cleans up the drive when you disable them though.
